Old School - I've always found melee to be the most effective. Because melee has superior armour and weapons, and is much cheaper than other abilities, combat revolves around melee.
F2P PKing ranged was the norm however, that Maple Longbow (sighted) was super OP and was the ideal weapon for sniping at wars and killing looters. It was probably the most powerful weapon for F2P, as you could range with it and a Rune armor set, and hit extremely accurately.
Although magic was acceptable but it was primarily an elite talent and had very few uses. Hybrid PKing can be described as exactly the same as saying that it has virtually no use. I think melee is the best combat method. Ranging is my preferred. The RS3: I like long-range combat styles far better than melee. I believe that magic is the most effective. It works great for all kinds of games, like Bossing and Slayering, or PvPing.
However, ranged is more effective when it comes down to PKing. As I said that long-range styles are better because most PvP activity nowadays takes place in multi-PvP zones. And as we all know, ranged is superior to magic to make it the most effective of both. It's as simple as that. Magic is the most effective combat style and my personal favorite, but ranged isn't too far behind. In fact, I'm not sure if I don't enjoy ranged just as often as I do magic.
